Benzidine is a white or yellowish crystalline solid that is highly toxic and carcinogenic. Benzidine was once used as an intermediate in the production of dyes, but due to its hazardous properties it has largely been replaced by safer alternatives. Exposure to benzidine has been linked to an increased risk of bladder cancer and other health effects, and several regulatory bodies classify it as a human carcinogen.
