Chloroacetic acid is a colourless liquid that is highly corrosive and can cause serious burns and damage to the eyes and skin. Chlorous acid is a very strong oxidant and can cause spontaneous combustion when in contact with organic materials. It can also release chlorine gas if heated or if it comes into contact with metals. It is not a common chemical and is not used in large quantities. It is mostly used under laboratory conditions as a reagent. It is also used in small quantities in the manufacture of other chemicals, in metal cleaning and in the production of chlorates.
