Chromates are chemical compounds containing a chromate ion. They are usually formed by the reaction of chromium compounds with oxygen or hydroxide. Chromates are used in a number of industries, including metallurgy, metal finishing and the production of pigments, dyes and catalysts. There are several types of chromates, such as zinc chromate, strontium chromate and barium chromate. However, some of these are toxic and carcinogenic and are being phased out in many countries to protect the environment and health.
