Diazomethane is a highly reactive colourless gas with a strong pungent odour. Diazomethane is used primarily as a reagent in the synthesis of organic compounds and is particularly useful in the synthesis of carboxylic acids and their derivatives. It is also used as a source of methylene groups in organic synthesis and in the synthesis of dyes and pesticides. Because of its highly reactive nature, it should be handled with care and stored in a cool, dry place.
