Manganate solutions are strong oxidizing agents. They are commonly used as disinfectants, antiseptics and water purifiers. Manganate solutions can also be used to oxidize organic compounds and in analytical chemistry as a reagent for determining the concentration of various analytes. The solutions are usually purple in colour and are easily prepared by dissolving potassium permanganate crystals in water.
