Sulphur dioxide is a colourless to white crystalline solid or a thick colourless gas with a strong pungent odour. It is used primarily in the production of sulfuric acid, one of the world's most important industrial chemicals. Sulphur dioxide is also a major air pollutant produced by various industrial processes, such as the burning of fossil fuels, and can have harmful effects on human health and the environment.
