Hydrogen chloride is a colourless, pungent gas. It is commonly used in industry for a variety of purposes, including chlorine production, ore refining and food processing. Hydrogen chloride is also found in the human body, where it is involved in the formation of stomach acid in the stomach. Dissolving hydrogen chloride in water produces hydrochloric acid, a strong, highly corrosive acid that can cause severe burns and damage to skin, eyes and other tissues.
