Questions and Answers

The highest temperature and pressure levels quoted do not in themselves determine the suitability of the material for a particular application. These limits are influenced by a number of factors such as flange type, bolts, seal installation and variable loads. Consequently, the maximum values and pT diagrams quoted offer only general recommendations.

For graphite seals, one of the main parameters is oxidation, which is the loss of material due to temperature and oxygen. This can cause a reduction in bolt tension, a reduction in seal pressure and ultimately lead to leaks in flange connections. The quality of graphite is determined by its purity, as higher levels of chlorides, fluorides and sulphur can increase oxidation and cause pitting corrosion. TGA analysis is used to detect oxidation by measuring weight loss. The higher the loss in TGA analysis, the lower the quality of the graphite.

In general, temperature and light exposure do not significantly affect the life of graphite materials. However, to ensure a shelf life of more than 10 years, observe the following storage conditions:

  • Temperature range between -20 °C and +50 °C.
  • Keep the storage area clean and dry (avoid flying dust and aggressive gases or fumes)
  • Place the material horizontally on a shelf or rack
  • Because graphite materials are inherently compressible, they are also susceptible to surface scratches. To prevent or limit possible damage to the surface of the material, take care to avoid contact with any surface containing loose dirt or other elements that could cause damage.

Graphite has excellent chemical resistance. It is highly resistant to most acids, bases, solvents and corrosive chemicals, except strong oxidizing agents. Its inert nature and compatibility with a wide range of chemicals ensures reliable sealing performance in harsh environments.
