MTBE, 2-Methoxy-2-Methylpropane

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is a clear, colourless liquid with a strong odour of gasoline. MTBE is used as an octane booster and oxygenate in gasoline. It is produced by the chemical reaction of methanol and isobutylene. However, MTBE has been found to contaminate groundwater, and its use has been phased out or restricted in many areas of the world because of its potential health and environmental hazards.
