Generator gas is a gaseous fuel made from air and a carbon-rich fuel such as coal or coke, in a process called gasification. The gasification process involves heating the carbon-rich fuel in the presence of a limited amount of air, resulting in a mixture of gases including carbon monoxide, nitrogen and methane. In the early 20th century, producer gas was widely used as a fuel source for heating, lighting and industrial processes before it was replaced by natural gas and other fossil fuels.
