An amine is a type of organic compound that contains a nitrogen atom bonded to one or more alkyl groups. Amines are classified as primary, secondary or tertiary according to the number of alkyl groups bonded to the nitrogen atom. They are important in many chemical and biological processes, including amino acid synthesis, drug metabolism, and regulation of neurotransmitter levels in the brain.
