Aromatic fuels are usually composed of a mixture of various aromatic compounds and may include benzene, toluene and xylene. They are commonly used as solvents and starting materials in the manufacture of other chemicals. They are also used as additives in gasoline to increase the octane rating of the fuel and as raw materials in the manufacture of chemicals and plastics. Aromatic fuels are flammable and can be harmful if large quantities are ingested or inhaled. They are also irritating and can cause skin and eye irritation.
