Butanoic Acid, Propanecarboxylic Acid
Butyric acid, also known as butanoic acid, is a short-chain fatty acid that has the characteristic smell of rancid butter or vomit. It is found in small amounts in butter and cheese and is also produced by the human body and some intestinal bacteria as a by-product of fermentation. It is also commonly used in perfumes and flavours, specifically as a food additive for butter and cheese flavours.
