2,2,2-Trichloroethane-1,1-diol
Chloral hydrate is a sedative and hypnotic. It is a colorless, crystalline solid that is soluble in water and ethanol. It was first synthesized in 1832 and has been used as a sedative and hypnotic and also as an insomnia remedy. It can be taken orally, rectally or intravenously. It has a long history of use, but its use has largely been replaced by other drugs because of the potential for abuse and its tendency to cause dependence.
