Chlorinated solvents are a group of organic compounds that contain chlorine atoms in their chemical structure. They are often used in dry cleaning, metal cleaning and degreasing, in the manufacture of pesticides and as a solvent in the paint and coatings industry. Examples of chlorinated solvents include trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene and methylene chloride. These solvents are known to have negative effects on human health and the environment, such as being toxic and carcinogenic, and their use is regulated in many countries.
