Diethyl ether (also known as ether or ethoxyethane) is a colorless volatile liquid organic compound that is commonly used as a solvent. It has a relatively low boiling point and a characteristic sweetish odour. It is commonly used as a solvent in the laboratory and also as a starting material in the synthesis of various chemicals such as pharmaceuticals and perfumes. Diethyl ether was used in the past as an anaesthetic but has largely been replaced by safer alternatives.
