Isopentane is a colourless, highly flammable gas that is used as a refrigerant, fuel and raw material for the production of other chemicals. It occurs in natural gas and crude oil and is also produced as a by-product of petroleum refining. In industry it is used, for example, in the production of isoprene, which is used in the manufacture of synthetic rubber and other materials.
