Dichlorofluoromethane, R-21, Freon 21
Refrigerant type 21 (R-21), chemically called dichlorofluoromethane, is a colourless and odourless gas. It is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) with a lower ozone depleting potential compared to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), but still contributes to ozone depletion. Its use is therefore being phased out. It is used as a medium-pressure refrigerant retrofitted in older systems and as a secondary refrigerant in some new systems.
