Pine tar is a thick, brownish-black, sticky substance that is obtained from pine wood by destructive distillation. It has a distinctive resinous odour and is commonly used as a wood preservative and sealer, as well as in the manufacture of soap, creosote and various other products. Pine tar is also used for its medicinal properties, including as an antiseptic and a treatment for skin diseases such as psoriasis.
