Petroleum ether is a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid that is derived from petroleum. It is a type of light hydrocarbon solvent that is used in a variety of industrial and laboratory applications. In industry, it is used as a solvent for waxes, greases, resins and rubber, and also for cleaning and degreasing metal parts. In the laboratory, it is used as a solvent for the extraction of essential oils and for the purification of organic compounds. Its boiling point is between 30-60 °C.
